COVID-19: Tech To The Rescue!

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

As the Covid 19 pandemic becomes more and more significant in South Africa, many companies will be put into a challenging position. Businesses, large and small, will have to restructure in order to allow for the implemented restrictions. Even though this stretch stems from a difficult situation, it is very interesting to see how different companies adapt. This is likely to become a sink or swim environment. Only the companies that can effectively evolve are going to continue growing.

So what can be done to ensure that these businesses stay above the noise? One very effective way is to utilise modern technology. There are many different technologies available that can make remote working much more effective.

Microsoft Teams is a hub for teamwork in Office 365. It allows for easy and reliable messaging, calling and conference collaborations. It can handle teams of up to 10 000 participants. It also has a free version and a free trial period, which is a massive bonus. Easy live online training makes it very simple to integrate into the workplace. Its built in file storage system makes it a very powerful tool in any environment.

Google Hangouts is a great communication tool which can easily be synced to any of your devices, web, Android or iOS. It makes for simple group video calling. It is also a free download. The only misgiving that we might have is that group video call is limited to 10 participants. This makes it a better tool for smaller teams or companies.

Zoom is a video conferencing app that can be downloaded on a laptop or phone. It enables easy calling, meeting and video webinars. This is a very good way of keeping your team connected when they are working from home. It has a low data usage which means that you can easily leave it open in the background should your team need your assistance immediately. Zoom is great for a more interactive environment.

Slack is another very powerful tool. This application is essentially a messaging service and works similarly to WhatsApp. The difference is that you have much more control over the group attendance and topics. Channels can be created with certain members according to a topic or division of work. This is great for sharing message, announcements and documents. Slack is also easily integrated with other technologies such as Google Drive and Dropbox.

There are many other technologies available, these are merely the ones we find most suitable to our environment. We hope this has shed a bit of light on the options available to you, as a company struggling to adapt to the current situation. Should you require a more tailored made solution which combines these current technologies, please contact us. Stay safe!
